I photographed this brown pelican on a rainy morning at Gulf State Park Pier along Alabama's Gulf Coast. Although I'd watched pelicans soaring overhead before, this was my first opportunity to truly appreciate them from just a few feet away.

Standing face to face, I was struck by their incredible size, weathered bill, and striking golden breeding plumage. With their ancient appearance and quiet confidence, pelicans feel like living reminders of a much older world.
